    Order of Service:

    When We Were in Bondage

    Theme: God’s Son Sent to Redeem                    Galatians 4:3-5

    3 Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world.

    4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.

    Call to Worship Song 179 (vs. 1, 4)      “Angels, from the Realms of Glory

    Prayer

    Jesus Who Saves His People From Sin           Matthew 1:18-23

    18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.

    19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just [man], and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.

    20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”

    22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

    Song 175 (vs. 1, 2)                     “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

    The Redeemer Promised                                Luke 1:76-79

    68 “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel,
    For He has visited and redeemed His people,

    69 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us
    In the house of His servant David,

    70 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets,
    Who have been since the world began,

    71 That we should be saved from our enemies
    And from the hand of all who hate us,

    72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers
    And to remember His holy covenant,

    73 The oath which He swore to our father Abraham:

    74 To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,

    75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

    Song 196 (vs. 1, 2)                         “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

    But When the Fulness of Time Had Come

    The Coming King and Savior                         Isaiah 9:2, 6

    2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
    Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death,
    Upon them a light has shined.

    For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given;
    And the government will be upon His shoulder.
    And His name will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

    7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end,
    Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
    To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
    From that time forward, even forever.
    The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

    Song 192 (vs. 1, 2)                       “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing”

    God Sent Forth His Son

    The Only Begotten Son                                    John 1:1, 14, 16

    1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. …

    14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. …

    16 And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

    Special Music        “O Holy Night”              Donna Lenard

    Born of a Woman

    Born in Bethlehem, Laid in a Manger                   Luke 2:1-7

    1 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

    Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child.

    So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

    Song 205 (vs. 1, 2)                                         “Away in a Manger”

    Born Under the Law To Redeem

    The Lord Our Righteousness                        Jeremiah 23:5-6;

    5 “Behold, the days are coming,” says the LORD,
    “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness;
    A King shall reign and prosper,
    And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth.

    6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely;
    Now this is His name by which He will be called:
    THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

    A Savior Who is Christ the Lord                           Luke 2:8-16

    8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.

    10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

    13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

    15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.

    Song 186 (vs. 1,2 )                                           “Joy Has Dawned

    Message          God Sent Forth His Son to Redeem             Pastor

    Prayer

    The New Covenant                                   Jeremiah 31:31, 33-34

    31 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah– …

    33 “But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

    34 “No more shall every man teach his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they all shall know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says the LORD. For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.”

    Special Music Song 402            “A Communion Hymn for Christmas”

    Celebrating the Lord’s Supper                   Matthew 26:26-28

    26 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke [it], and gave [it] to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

    27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave [it] to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.

    28 “For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.

    Prayer of Thanks

    That We Might Receive the Adoption As Sons

    Sons through Christ                                       Gal 3:26-28; 4:6-7

    26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

    27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

    28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

    6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!”

    7 Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
